Witches

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Here are some random witches who might not be that spooky, but would definitely make for a fun night of trick-or-treating!

Spares

My oldest has really been getting into Harry Potter lately. It's a fun thing to watch happen and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't becoming a little re-obsessed myself.

My favorite part of the whole series has to be the rich and colorful characters that fill out the background.

Here are a really small (and very random) few.

The Wizarding STUFF of Harry Potter - Part 3

Ron Weasley is a mess. Naturally, his assortment of accessories would follow suit.

The Wizarding STUFF of Harry Potter - Part 2

This batch of accessories from that wonderful world of witchcraft and wizardry is devoted to the cleverest of Gryffindors. I'm speaking of none other than Miss Hermione Granger!

I wanted to include at least one book with each of these, but since no one at Hogwarts loves books more than Hermione, I included a few more... probably not enough now that I think about it.

The Wizarding STUFF of Harry Potter - Part 1

Wands, whatnots, macguffins, artifacts... The Harry Potter series isn't just people and places. It's also things! And because of such, I thought it'd be fun to devote a few posts to just the STUFF that makes up the Wizarding World, starting with the accessories of Harry himself.

I really racked my brain to include as many as I could but if you notice anything that I left out, please DO NOT let me know as the thought of such failure will keep me up at night.

The Magic Of Christmas

He travels around the world in one night.
He slides down chimneys.
He can fit all of those presents into one bag.

I'm sure I'm not the first one to come up with this theory, but I'm convinced that the entire Harry Potter franchise spawned from J.K. Rowling coming up with a way to explain Santa Claus.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Prisoner of Azkaban - Hermione Granger

I've drawn Harry... and then Ron. I couldn't let the year end without completing the trio, so here she is: my latest take on Hermione Granger!

We all know Hermione likes cats... maybe it comes from practically being one for a while. That being the case, I thought it'd be fun to give her a cute kitty-cat headband.

Cosplay Was Never This Cool!

By far, one of my consistently favorite things to draw for this blog over the past 10 years has been these lovable little guys that I call 'Penguin Suits!' I'm a little fuzzy on where the concept comes from. As I said in my last post, I'm a sucker for mashups and, while this isn't technically a mashup per se, it's still along those same lines.

Back when things like Custom Mighty Muggs were all the rage, I wanted my own little thing to make look like other things. I don't remember why but I chose these emotionless little penguins to be my canvas and voila! Penguin Suits!

These little guys have gone through a couple of revamps over the years and so I only thought it fitting to bring the first lineup up to date. Hopefully those of you checking in have enjoyed looking at these as much I enjoy drawing them because I don't think I'm going to let up anytime soon.

Prisoner of Azkaban - Ron Weasley

Always fun to draw, here's Ron Weasley, looking at his best buddy's tea leaves.

That sounds weird.

Prisoner of Azkaban - Harry Potter

It's been far too long since I've drawn anything Harry Potter. Here's the Wiz Kid, himself solemnly swearing his up-to-no-gooodness!

Labeling Mr. Potter - PART TWO

As promised, here are my set of disc labels for "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

I first read the Harry Potter books back in 2007. I had seen all of the films up to that point, and thought I'd give the books a shot since there was such so much hubbub being made. However, instead of sitting and looking at actual pages like some medieval neanderthal, I joined the digital age and listened to the audio books.

While I loved the story and the superb way it was read by the great Jim Dale, I thought the labels for each of the discs were a little... lackluster. But since I'm a nerd, Problem SOLVED! And thus I was inspired to create my own disc labels with J.K. Rowling's wonderful characters!

I figure this will be a sort of on-again off-again project for me, so who knows when I'll get around to the Prisoner of Azkaban. I will eventually, I'm sure.

Chamber of Secrets - Albus Dumbledore

Here's the last in my Chamber of Secrets lineup, (finally, right?) Albus Percival Wulfric Bryan Dumbledore.

Now, to tear myself down a little. I tried to make Dumbledore resemble Merlin from Disney's "Sword in the Stone" because I always kind of pictured Dumbledore as Merlin-esque. Although, after the fact, I think I made him look too much like Disney's Merlin. Dumbledore has a much sweeter demeanor than Merlin, and I don't really feel like that is conveyed well here. In fact, you could replace Fawkes with Archimedes the Owl, and this wouldn't look like a Harry Potter pic at all.

Ah well. This sort of self-criticism is one of the reasons I'm drawing these guys in the first place. Hopefully, my Dumbledore will improve when I revisit him some time down the line.

And now to give myself a little pat on the back... I think Fawkes looks awesome!

Chamber of Secrets - The Basilisk

So apparently, a long time ago in the world of Harry Potter, some guy decided to make a frog sit on a chicken egg until it hatched, and the result was this snarly horrific beast that can kill anything just by looking at it. Sure, why not? I guess that makes sense.

In the Harry Potter books, the Basilisk is pretty much just a giant snake, but in some versions of folklore  and mythology, it's a weird hybrid of a snake and a rooster. I wanted to work in a small amount of rooster in my basilisk, which is why it has the beak and the red plume sort-of-thing.

This was my favorite from these Chamber of Secrets characters to draw so far. Most of my drawings tend to be your typical person of some sort with a pair of arms and legs. It was nice breaking away from that, even if it was for this hideous thing.

Chamber of Secrets - Moaning Myrtle

I really don't have much to say about Moaning Myrtle. She's always in the restroom. Is she stuck there? That would be a terrible resting place for your eternal spirit. And from the opposite point-of-view, can you imagine trying to use the restroom while some ghost floats around?

I don't think I could "go."

Chamber of Secrets - Gilderoy Lockhart

Well, I'm here with my first post of 2013! And it's back to the 'Chamber of Secrets' gang with Professor Fancy Pants himself, Gilderoy Lockhart!

In a society where almost everyone wears long robes, it would be difficult to stand out as a "fancy pants," but that Gilderoy pulls it off easier than planting a mandrake during the winter solstice! Which I assume is easy. Since I'm not a wizard, I have no frame of reference.

Lockhart is known for his smile, and I tried to make that stand out here. I also tried to give him, (with clothing and such) a slightly heroic look, but with a twinge of phony oozing out.

This post is also a two-for-one special, because Gilderoy Lockhart without Cornish Pixies would be like the Hufflepuff basement without a Fat Friar!

...again, I have no frame of reference.

Chamber of Secrets - Dobby

I guess most major franchises have their "Jar Jar Binks." You know what I'm talking about, that one annoying character that's just sort of there and could easily be left out. The Lord of the Rings has Pippin. Thundercats has Snarf. Star Wars has... well... Jar Jar Binks. For Harry Potter, in my opinion, it's Dobby. I'm sure some could argue that Dobby served a purpose of some kind, but I just seemed to wince every time he showed up.

Aunt Petunia's Pudding, on the other hand, I feel is the very core of the entire Harry Potter series. Don't ask me why.

Don't.

This is going to do it with the Harry Potter stuff for a while. I wanted to do something different for the holidays, but worry not! I'll have the rest of the Book Two gang after the New Year!

Chamber of Secrets - Hermione Granger

Ah... Miss Granger. I had a lot of fun drawing this one. Hermione's hair, in general, is fun to draw! Hermione as a cat... that's fun! Plus, since she's supposed to be disguising herself as Millicent Bulstrode, I got to color her robes with that cool Slytherin green. Again... Fun!
