Life is Like a Candy Cane!

How about that "2020" style move Disney pulled by airing the Christmas episode of DuckTales, and then cancelling the show almost instantly after? Merry Christmas, fans!

But seriously... Merry Christmas!

Meep! Meep!

It's not like a new Silly Nate tradition or anything, but I've been making an annual post of Looney Tunes fan art and just barely made it under the wire this year!

Murder Penguins

I've been geeking out about doing these for some time now and finally got around to it. Here are the characters from one of my favorite board games, Clue, in the way they were never intended... as penguins.

But hey... so what?

Mario & Luigi Trading Cards: Pack 1

It's been 35 years since the North American release of the classic Nintendo game, Duck Hunt!

And even more momentous than that, it's the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. as well! I thought it'd be fun to imagine an animated series based on the beloved video game... well... besides that one... or that one... I thought it'd be fun to imagine ANOTHER animated series based on the beloved video game, and one that comes with a coordinating line of trading cards.

Here's the first wave, front and back. Stick around to collect them all!

Duck-Blur

As I said in a previous post, I wanted to do a multi-point presentation over why I love the DuckTales reboot as much as I do. I wanted to go into lengthy detail into all the ways it pays homage to the original series, as well as the Carl Barks comics, while simultaneously expanding on these pre-established concepts in order to construct a new and seamless universe that's entertaining for new and old fans alike. I wanted to talk about how in a sea of reboots and remakes, DuckTales actually takes risks and feels fresh, rather than just copying what came before beat for beat.

I wanted to do all of this... but instead, I decided to convey my love for the series through a barrage of fan art.

Drawing is my love language.

Jellicles Can

Thanks to the recent film, trashing the Andrew Lloyd Weber's Cats has become pretty commonplace, which I think means we won't be seeing any other adaptations of the musical anytime soon. I haven't seen the film yet, but the theatrical production is greatly appreciated in our household, and so I find this fact a little depressing.

I decided to cheer myself up by giving some of the characters a toony new look and hoping they get another chance sooner rather than later.

Zeffer, Zoofus, & Bud

Back when I made my Disneyland Smidgeons, I came up with these three little guys loosely based on Sleeping Beauty's Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. I liked them so much that I decided to give them each their own book.

Right Down the Middle of Main Street USA

If I was able to work anywhere in the Disney parks, (my Disney Dream Job, if you will) I would choose to be one of the colorful, fun-loving citizens of Main Street USA. These wonderful people roam the entrance of Magic Kingdom singing songs and greeting guests as they make their way into the park. I love how these characters aren't from any film or franchise, but they're there nonetheless, with no other purpose than to spread joy. Just one of the many things that makes it the most magical place on Earth!

Since Walt Disney World officially reopens its doors today, I thought I'd commemorate the occasion with a little tribute to these Pals from the Park... beginning with the late great Mayor Weaver!

Unga Bunga

I haven't yet seen Scoob, but the idea of a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe is one that I might be able to get behind... although it could mean having to make another timeline.

As part of the hype, I felt like taking a stab at a bizarre favorite of mine from the world of Hanna-Barbera: Captain Caveman!

The Old Man and the Thing

I was thinking (as one often does) about how the physics would work in this world of co-living with tiny cartoons. Then I came up with this fun concept of a cranky little scavenger who collects both 'real' and 'toon' objects.

The Force Is Strong With These Two

I've been seeing different people do their "Jedisonas" and I thought, since it's Star Wars Day, I'll have my own little dyad do some Star Wars bounding of their own.

May the 4th be with you!

Lights, Camera, Nephew!

It's been far too long since I've tried drawing everyone's favorite triplets. The tricky thing with these guys is that all three have to look identical to one another. That's how triplets work. Fortunately I know my way around some Command+C. Here they are in all of their RGB glory: Huey, Dewey, and Louie!

It should come as no surprise that I first fell in love with these guys while watching Ducktales on the Disney Afternoon. They appeared here as they always had before - three lovable, and sometimes mischievous kiddos, whose shared personality was always there to provide some Greek chorus-like commentary on Scrooge's many adventures.

Some time later, the creative minds at Disney posed the question: What if the nephews had individual personalities? You know... like actual people do! Thus Quack Pack was born! Huey was the smooth-talker, Dewey was the wise-guy and Louie was the goofball! Okay... so their new personalities weren't that individual... but they at least looked and sounded slightly different.

Then, in 2017, we got the Ducktales reboot which, in my opinion, is one of the greatest things ever accomplished by humanity! I'll save my multi-point speech on that subject for later, but the show excels at taking a past concept and making it better. Such is the case with Huey, Dewey, and Louie. This time around, the nephews are ACTUAL distinct individuals. Huey is the hard-working perfectionist, Dewey is the attention-seeking showboat, and Louie is the laid back schemer who sees all the angles.

Whatever the iteration, whatever the personality, whatever the shirt color (I think Dewey was originally orange), there is one consistent truth that continues to echo across generations. These ducks are the best!

Oh and Webby. Webby's also pretty cool.

Meet the... These Guys!

For whatever reason, drawing original characters is extremely difficult for me. I'm not talking about creating original characters. I can do that all day, every day. When it comes to getting them out of my head, however, and down into some form of actual existence, I get ridiculously intimidated!

"How do I convey the right personality?"
"Why doesn't their hair look right?"
"Is this an homage to the new Mickey Mouse, or am I just ripping it off?"
"Could someone rip ME off?"
"Why do they look like the Animaniacs?!"

Sometimes you just have to shut all of that out and plow through, I guess. That's at least what I'm doing here. Meet the gang: Glo, Hickory, Tag, Bozzle, and... the robot!
