The King Under The Mountain

Here's one more Hobbit character before my Lord of the Rings enthusiasm temporarily fizzles out for a while. This take on Thorin Oakenshield unintentionally ended up looking a little bit like Tommy Chong. After thinking about it for a little bit, I realized... there is nothing about any of that that I do not like.

I'm by no means a big Tolkien fan, so maybe someone can clarify for me. In the films, at least, Bilbo's sword is the only one that glows blue, even though Thorin's and Gandalf's were also made by the elves. Why is that? I think it'd look pretty cool if there were a whole army with glowing blue swords?!? Oooh! And what if the villains' swords glowed red?!? AND the whole thing took place IN OUTER SPACE?!? Now that's a film I'd like to see!

I'd Like To See Them TRY!

Radagast the Brown

Here's my take on a couple of characters that I would like to have seen better developed in the Hobbit movies. It seems like if they absolutely HAD to stretch the book into three movies, then they could have used some of that extra time to expand upon these interesting, yet very minor, characters and give them a bigger part to play.

Beorn

Take Beorn, for example. Here's a character that was actually in the book, as opposed to the character, Legolas, who was not. Yet, Legolas ends up with the most screen time and character development, even though the dude already had his trilogy! I suppose the filmmakers felt that it was a safer bet to give us something familiar rather than throw a bunch of new stuff at us. But (and I can't believe I'm even asking this), what's the point of introducing a character that can turn into a giant bear and then hardly spend any time at all showing him turn into said bear?!?

On the other hand, Peter Jackson has never critiqued my drawing abilities, so I probably shouldn't tell him how to make movies.

Concerning Hobbits

I once read a quote from J.R.R. Tolkien that said, "The hobbits are just what I should like to have been but never was - an entirely unmilitary people who always came up to scratch in a clinch."

Bilbo Baggins

Of course, if any one ever wanted to quote me on the matter, what I'm not but should like to be is a wizard... because they practically live forever, have magic sticks, and can summon giant birds to fly them away from all sorts of scratchy clinches.
