Two January 13th's in a row that I have, as happenstance would have it, posted something Peppa Pig related!
There's a LOT of artists out there who have put their own spin on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I thought it was about time I threw mine on the pile, starting with Mikey here!
A lot of versions have Michelangelo as the little guy, but I always saw him as more of a big fratboy-type goofball. Oh! And I had to give him a ton of accessories. That was the whole fun of it.
Once again it has apparently come time for me to give my Penguin Suits another stylistic overhaul. Since 2009, I've been drawing little penguins dressed as various characters from pop culture, but for this iteration, I thought I'd start off with some actual original characters.
So, for quite a while now, I’ve been working on creating my own toy line – the ZAGLORDS. Just a fun thing on the side and strictly pretend… obviously. I’ve watched and rewatched a ton of The Toys That Made Us, developed my own lore (woof), and even came up with an extensive backstory for the fake toy company making my fake toys, but that’s all a bunch of nonsense for another post.
This past December, I finally conceptualized the first in the line – a main protagonist I’ve named Kilroy. But what’s a hero without a proper villain?
So here he is – the evil corporate overlord whom I’m deciding to call SOLZAR THE ETERNAL!
In the He-Man episode of The Toys That Made Us, the artist who first conceptualized Skeletor talks about a moment that traumatized him as a child when he saw an actual human skeleton. It was probably just some malarkey to make him sound original in saying, “skeletons are spooky.” Nevertheless, it got me thinking – What frightens me?
I mulled it over for quite some time and eventually came up with a two-part answer. Number one is rich people, or rather corrupt rich people. The thought of these larger-than-life type personas with unlimited resources who, rather than use their powerful position to benefit the less fortunate, take advantage of others for their own self gain… and there’s seemingly nothing anyone can ever do about it because they’re just that powerful. That terrifies me.
I decided to have Solzar completely clad in gold – a bright and beautiful symbol of everything we think we want, exemplifying this notion that with wealth comes happiness and is therefore this goal that we must all strive to attain. All the while, there’s this fat, ugly monster underneath who only wants to consume more. Basically, a bunch of malarkey to make me sound original in saying, “the bad guy is greedy.”
And the second part of my answer is a T-Rex with feathers. Those things freak me out!
If you were to go back in time and tell a young me that there would one day be a TV show with Boba Fett, as well as a show with Obi-Wan Kenobi, but the show with MON MOTHMA would be the only one that was any good, I would have said… Why are you doing this, Future Person?! You have a time machine and this is how you use it?? There has to be a more beneficial application of the technology!
I’ve always been a huge fan of toys. A lot of people grow out of it. I don’t know how that works. It hasn’t happened to me yet.
Back in 2021, I was going through a whole thing, like I do from time-to-time, where I feel burnt out on fan art and long to sink my teeth into something more original. I was watching a lot of The Toys That Made Us (incredible show by the way) and had the thought… I should create my own line of action figures!
Not literally, of course. Ha! I wish! CAN YOU IMAGINE?!?
I’ve played around with… what do you even call this… toy fan art(?) before with this and these, but, like I said, I really wanted to go all in on something original and basically conceptualize a line of action figures that I would have LOVED as a kid. So after working hard on it the last couple of years, I’m finally proud to introduce what I’m calling ZAGLORDS!

So the idea here is that Kilroy, who is of course the main character in the whole line (my He-Man, my Optimus, my Rainbow Brite) has this sort of power called the Cosmic Flame that he uses to create different constructs. His go to weapon of choice is this staff, that you'll see in his accessories, which he nicknames, "The Big Bang." He can also use his power to create rockets, basketballs, you name it... and to give everything his own sense of flair, Kilroy also conjures a multitude of stickers covering everything he creates. I even thought it'd be fun to have every Zaglords action figure come with their own unique collectible sticker so kids can do the same, but I wasn't able to find room in the budget. What?
Of course, Kilroy here actually dates back way further than 2021. Cozy up, kiddies! It’s time for some backstory... WITH old artwork to make it, you know... a humbling backstory!
It was the hottest of nonsense but believe me when I tell you it… was… EVERYTHING to preteen Nathan! I spent the next few years developing this idea further. I even illustrated “posters” for several Space Chase sequels. Again… with an erasable pen.
The years went by and I would often revisit the idea. In college, I even finished my first draft of a Space Chase screenplay. It told the story of a group of thieves who use a cosmic crystal to save the galaxy. And again… not a purple dinosaur in sight. This was going to be my ticket, I thought, but life played out differently (and for the better) and the whole thing eventually fell by the wayside.
I named the guy Kilroy.
Kilroy is determined and resilient. He’s a risk taker, an optimist, an innovator, and at times… a little reckless. Like I said, the kind of toy/character that I would have LOVED as a kid. He may be a little derivative, but I try to remind myself that everything has been done before, but not by you. Do your best to make it your own. Don’t get discouraged. Have fun… and settle down.
This is just a post on some blog, dude!
Happy Halloween, everyone!
Here are some random witches who might not be that spooky, but would definitely make for a fun night of trick-or-treating!
To some degree or another, we all have our own individual ideas for how we'd like to see the Care Bears rebooted, right? That's not just a me thing, is it?
