It's December. Christmas is right around the corner, which makes it the perfect time for a post featuring... ghosts. Isn't there a Christmas song that mentions telling ghost stories? Let's see... it's not "Jingle Bells." What's that other one?
Ah well. I didn't post this in October. I'm posting it now. I thought it would be fun to sort of re-imagine the characters of Super Mario Brothers. Boo here is my first attempt. My goal was to make the style of the character as different as possible while keeping the subtle elements that make the character recognizable.
For those that don't know, here's what the little guy actually looks like.
Happy Halloween! I'm sorry this isn't a Halloween themed post, but... whatchamagonnado?
Someone over at the Action Cartooning forum suggested that everyone draw something Dr. Who related. I drew this. Although I have to admit, I've never seen one single episode of the show. Show? It is a show, right? Not one of them comic strips or Online Multiple Moo-Moo O's that all the kids are into these days? However, I am a fan of another franchise, if you will, that also features a time traveling phone booth. So yeah. Bill and Ted, Dr. Who... Potato, Potato. Wow. That expression does not work in written form.
Meet Bartholomew Kelp... the Steampunk Manatee!
By jove, I'd wager a deuce hog that if Ol' Bartholomew had him a pair a skotches, he'd be the jauntiest toff this side a Piccadilly!
Here's part two of my attempt at Saul Bass meets TMNT. For this installment, we have the one responsible for the phrase, "Cowabunga!" ...or at least the one responsible for its popularity.
I don't know. I'm not a vernacular historian. Is that even a thing?
You've heard of fan art, but what about fan MERCHANDISING art? That's just geeking out on a whole other level! ...and also wasting time on another level. But whatever.
I've always kind of liked the unique design that all of the Disney park characters have, and I also like buying STUFF! And if there's one thing the Disney parks like, it's selling STUFF!
Throw all of these things together, and you get the Park Pals.
I just did the main five for now, plus Tinkerbell because everyone loves Tinkerbell these days... and I wanted to do at least one "face" character.
I've always been a fan of the shirts at threadless.com, but when I saw they were doing a Muppet Design Challenge, I had to enter!
Most of the designs feature Kermit and the gang, and rightfully so, but I wanted a shirt featuring the somewhat obscure, yet personal favorite, Muppaphones.
Granted something so obscure isn't likely to win, but it was fun to draw. I tried to give each Muppaphone a different personality, while still expressing their overall discomfort.
If you get a chance, click here and score my design on a scale of 1 to 5. Five is the best and One is the... well... LEAST best.
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to score!
...HEY! Someone should put THAT on a t-shirt!
P.S. - For those of you wondering, THIS is a Muppaphone.
For all of you aspiring artists out there, like me, this forum is a great place to visit. I have come SO FAR with my work in the last 4 years and it's mainly due to the comfortable atmosphere of the forum and the constructive comments from all of the other artists. Not to mention the incredible tutorials from Ben Caldwell himself.
Check it out... and join the fun with YOUR D.C. dog!
So aside from the fact that Saul Bass made awesome posters, he also had a cool name. Someone else with a cool name: the leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo. Incidentally, Leonardo was named for artist Leonardo da Vinci, who painted "The Last Supper" which depicted Jesus and a bunch of apostles. Jesus also had an apostle named Paul, who's original name was... wait for it... Saul.
The third installment of me drawing other people's characters as different other people's characters.
THE MASTERS: This last one is a little obscure, but I've been playing a lot of "Epic Mickey" lately and can't think of anyone maniacal enough to play the Emperor other than the Mad Doctor.
Disney has already done this with a line of action figures, but I wanted to give it sort of my own spin.
THE HERO: Usually, Mickey Mouse is always the one to be portrayed as Luke Skywalker, which does make more sense, but I've always loved Donald Duck and wanted to draw him as the hero from Tatooine.
After yet another hiatus, I return to the Wonderful World of the Blog. Hopefully I will have some fun stuff to post in the next few weeks... so, stay tuned.
