Here's part two of my attempt at Saul Bass meets TMNT. For this installment, we have the one responsible for the phrase, "Cowabunga!" ...or at least the one responsible for its popularity.
I don't know. I'm not a vernacular historian. Is that even a thing?
You've heard of fan art, but what about fan MERCHANDISING art? That's just geeking out on a whole other level! ...and also wasting time on another level. But whatever.
I've always kind of liked the unique design that all of the Disney park characters have, and I also like buying STUFF! And if there's one thing the Disney parks like, it's selling STUFF!
Throw all of these things together, and you get the Park Pals.
I just did the main five for now, plus Tinkerbell because everyone loves Tinkerbell these days... and I wanted to do at least one "face" character.
I've always been a fan of the shirts at threadless.com, but when I saw they were doing a Muppet Design Challenge, I had to enter!
Most of the designs feature Kermit and the gang, and rightfully so, but I wanted a shirt featuring the somewhat obscure, yet personal favorite, Muppaphones.
Granted something so obscure isn't likely to win, but it was fun to draw. I tried to give each Muppaphone a different personality, while still expressing their overall discomfort.
If you get a chance, click here and score my design on a scale of 1 to 5. Five is the best and One is the... well... LEAST best.
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to score!
...HEY! Someone should put THAT on a t-shirt!
P.S. - For those of you wondering, THIS is a Muppaphone.
For all of you aspiring artists out there, like me, this forum is a great place to visit. I have come SO FAR with my work in the last 4 years and it's mainly due to the comfortable atmosphere of the forum and the constructive comments from all of the other artists. Not to mention the incredible tutorials from Ben Caldwell himself.
Check it out... and join the fun with YOUR D.C. dog!
So aside from the fact that Saul Bass made awesome posters, he also had a cool name. Someone else with a cool name: the leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo. Incidentally, Leonardo was named for artist Leonardo da Vinci, who painted "The Last Supper" which depicted Jesus and a bunch of apostles. Jesus also had an apostle named Paul, who's original name was... wait for it... Saul.
